Abstract

This study was carried out in Mansoura University Hospital to find out the relationship between organizational culture and occupational stress among staff nurses. It was conducted at all medical and surgical units of Mansoura University Hospital. It included 173 staff nurses( 112 nurses working in surgical units and 60 nurses working in medical units). Data collection tools included two types of questionnaire sheets. There is highly significant correlation between organizational culture and occupational stress. Constructive cultural norms were the highest among staff nurses worked at both medical and surgical units. Levels of occupational stress were high at both medical and surgical units. Lack of support from leadership and conflict with physician were the highest factors contributing to stress at medical units, while, disagreement among nurses was the highest at surgical units. It is recommended that leaders should act as role models for desirable behaviors to encourage cultural transition of nurses to more positive norms, rewarding and promoting nurses with good performance, developing clear elicited and well designed job description for each category of nursing, allowing nurses with greater participation in decision making by encouraging two way communication.
