Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease with considerable heterogeneity in clinical manifestations and disease course, characterized by pathogenic autoantibody formation, immune complex deposition and end organ damage.
The multiplicity of aetiological factors of the disease like genetic, environmental, hormonal and immunological factors could explain the variability of disease manifestations observed, not only between individuals, but also between ethnic groups. The understanding of the distinctive manifestations, course and outcome of SLE among different ethnic groups could lead to a better understanding of the factors which contribute to these differences as well as to the delivery of better medical care to these populations.
