Abstract Approximately 80% of fire-related deaths occur, not from bum injury to the airway but from inhalation of the toxic products especially carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide gases. Inhalation injury is generally caused by thermal bums mastly it 1S confined to the upper airways. Mechanism of Injury: Inhalation injury occurs in 3 ways: ’ -1- Cell injury and pulmonary parenchymal damage. -2- Hypoxaemia by interruption of oxygen delivery by asphyxiants. -3- End organ damage by systemic absorption through the respiratory tract. Pulmonary Complications of Inhalation Injury: -1- Nasocomial pneumonia -2- Adult respiratory distress syndrome -3- Respiratory fatigue. |
