Abstract

The aging population is rapidly growing allover the world and in Egypt as well. In general, people reach their sixties and seventies healthy. People in their sixties need to develop a life plan for making the next 20 or 30 years they are likely to live, a quality phase of the life cycle. The way in which people experience late adulthood appears to be a function of a complex interrelationship of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial factors. The cognitive functioning of people over 60 vary as much as those of people of earlier developmental stages. Chronological age cannot be used as a predictor of physical and cognitive decline. The cognitive aspects of aging are influenced by many factors as history of diseases, usage of drugs, disability limitation and the degree of social activities performed by the elderly and the support he receives. However, older people can maintain cognitive integrity if appropriate care and adequate social support is provided, and if they are valued by themselves and others as meaningful participants and contributors. Aim:- The aim of this study is to investigate the ,effect of social support on cognitive status of the elderly . Materials and method:- The study was carried out in Comprehensive Health Unit of rural village in Tanta governorate namely Sigen AI-Koom, where a convenient sample (300 elderly) of both sexe~ were interviewed individually using a questionnaire sheet to investigate the effect of social support on cognitive status of the elderly.
