Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major type of primary liver cancer and one of the most frequent human malignant neoplasms (El-Serag et al., 2001 and Momosaki et al., 2005) and is estimated to cause more than a quarter of a million deaths each year throughout the world (Katyal et al., 2000 and Steel et al., 2004).

The aim of the present work is to assess the diagnostic value of des-gamma carboxy prothrombin (DCP) in Egyptian patients with HCC and performed on two groups of patients, from the Tropical Medicine Department and outpatient’s clinic for early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), Ain Shams University Hospitals; Group I consisted of forty patients with Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), their ages ranged between 36 and 72 years (mean 54.4 ± 7 years) and included 35 males (87.5% of patients) and 5 females (12.5% of patients). Group II consisted of twenty patients with nonmalignant chronic liver disease; their ages ranged between 28 and 52 years (mean 40.4 ± 7.48 years and included 5 males (25% of patients) and 15 females (75% of patients).
