Abstract

The performance of two automated hematology analyzers (Coulter T660 and Coulter STKS) were compared with manually performed blood cell counts in 300 samples with a broad range of distributional and morphologic abnormalities. 100 apparently normal adults, 50 apparently normal children, 50 with thrombocytopenia, 50 with low Hb, RBC count and RBC indices and DW which may be normal as iron deficiency anaemia was suspected which confirmed by detecting serum iron and TIBC, and 50 with thrombocytosis. We found that Hb determined by automated methods are more precise than that determined by manual method because in automated instruments non-ionic detergent is included to ensure rapid cell lysis.
