Abstract Erectile dysfunction is a common problem affecting about 25% of men by the age of 65 years. In patients with organic etiology, vascular abnormalities are the most common and among them veno-occlusive disorders represents about 30-50% of cases. It was shown that penile erection can occur in the presence of both sympathetic and parasympathetic blockers and this led to the search for non-adrenergic non-cholinergic (NANC) neuro-transmitters responsible for penile erection. Nitric Oxide (NO) and Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide (VIP) are the main NANC been studied in the last decade. |
