Abstract

Chronic leg ulcers are common, disabling, resistant to treatment and expensive to manage problems in the surgical practice.
The etiology of chronic leg ulcers is multifactorial. Data on the natural course of the disease show that healing rates achieved by conservative method in clinical trials or in newly established clinics are neither achievable in the whole patients nor sustainable for long time.
Diagnosis of the underlying cause of chronic leg ulcer may be straight forward in some cases but careful evaluation is needed in a percentage of chronic leg ulcers otherwise the true diagnosis will be missed.
Accordingly there are developing trends in the dressing techniques and surgical management of chronic non specific ulcers of the leg.
Management of chronic leg ulcers depends on the underlying cause. In addition to management of the ulcer itself management of the cause of chronic non-specific ulcers is- still difficult and needs prolonged care.
Some new techniques are under trial, yet no definite results are available until now.
