Abstract

The present study was undertaken in a filarial endemic village (treated village) in the Nile Delta to evaluate the impact of MDA combined with elimination of mosquito breeding in all cesspits with expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads on Culex pipiens population densities and filarial parasite infection in mosquito. The impact of these interventions was compared with data obtained from a comparable endemic village under mass drug administration (MDA) intervention alone (untreated village). Results obtained show that cesspits connected to houses were the most common larval habitats as >90% of houses, in both villages, had mosquitogenic cesspits to collect sewage. Small ground pools developed along drainage canals, drains, and irrigation canals and ditches were less frequently reported. The species composition was the same in both villages, namely: Cx. pipiens, Cx. perexiguus, Cx. antennatus, Cs. longiareolata, Och. caspius and An. tenebrosus. In both villages, all cesspits yielded the highest density of Cx. pipiens larvae (>200 larvae/10 dips) compared to < 20 larvae/10 dips reported for the remaining larval habitats. Larval control through application of a floating layer of EPS beads prevented the larval breeding of Cx. pipiens drastically in all wet cesspits. However, an unexpected sustained increase in Cx. pipiens larval densities (> 50 larvae/10 dips) occurred in most ground pools developed in blocked drains after two months of applying EPS in cesspits. This result suggests that prevention of mosquitoes from laying their eggs in treated pits forced Cx. pipiens adult populations to change their oviposition preference and lay their eggs in breeding sites where larvae were less likely to be present.
