Abstract

AIDS is a rapidly growing public health problem throughout e world. It is not confind to one particular country nor to one k group, but has escalated to the level of a global pandemic. AIDS has produced three related world wide epidemics: HIV fection, AIDS itself, and the social, cultural, economic and litical reaction to these first two. Fear and ignorance are ving severe effects at the personal, family and social level. rhaps the worst aspect is the attitude of some health care roviders where their unjustified fear affect their willingness to re for persons with HIV / AIDS. is study was conducted to fulfil the following aims: .To assess perception, attitudes and beliefs, regarding tlIV / AIDS among physicians and dentists in Alexandria. . To develop continuing medical education regarding HIV / AIDS for these sectors tailored to their needs using different approaches. . To assess the impact of such intervention and to compare the different approaches used. In order to achieve these objectives a randrIf11ized controlled intervention study was conducted. fhe target population were physicians and dentists,~ working in governmental health care facilities in Alex:1ndria. A total ()f 500 tudy subjects were enrolled in this study from 19 overnmental health care facilities offering peripheral or central are, those were chosen randomly by proportional allocation. The study subjects were allocated into five equal groups, .ne hundred each. One group was considered as control group, ’hile the other four were assigned to four different intervention these included; lecture format, group-discussion, ypothetical cases using role-playing, and booklets distribution. related intervention was developed using these ifferent educational approaches of CME for physicians and entists. Both the control and intervention groups were ubjected to pre and post test using a pre-designed luestionnaire. The control group participants filled it twice, once t the first encounter, and the second two months later. While for the intervention group, the post test was administered twice; limmediately and two months after intervention. The used study instrument was a self-administered questionnaire. The study revealed the following main results: . Only 18.4of physicians and dentists had previously attended a CME on HIV / AIDS. . HIV / AIDS related knowledge appeared to be minimum among physicians and dentists. The overall mean knowledge score was 8.6 (high = 27). Serious misinformation in issues related to modes of HIV transmission was observed, where failure to entify known modes of transmission and suspecting lproved modes of transmission appears to be a common tisinterpretation
