Abstract

In the present work the foot structure among the gekkonid lizards (T. annularis; T. mauritanica; P. hasslequistii H. turcicus; S. elegans and T. tripolitanus) shows a wide range of variation. According to the habitat type on which the lizards live, their digits show distinctive modifications for either climbing or digging. Such modifications are considered as a correlation with the environmental functional demands. However, the limbs as a whole are responsible for deriving the body forward during the normal locomotion .
Hence, the present work demonstrated the morphology, skin structure and osteology of the foot, especially the digits in different climbing and digging geckos which occupy different habitat area. The distinctive digital modifications of each digit were also described. This study however, was aimed to determine a relationship between the morphology, skin histology and the osteology of the foot in the different present geckos with their function and locomotion pattern.
The external features of the digits in the present geckos were examined dorsally and ventrally with different magnification powers under the microscope.
For histological study, cross and longitudinal sections through the digits were stained with haematoxyline and eosin.
