Abstract

Geographic information systems (GIS) are considered one of the most evolving fields of research nowadays. This is due to their ability to represent the reality by both its spatial and descriptive dimensions. Several researches where done to study the contribution of GIS in the geotechnical analysis. But most of these researches were focusing on gathering all the geotechnical data of pore holes in one unified data base and the representation of soil stratification. These two applications are considered two direct applications of GIS. This research tried to widen the scope of GIS contribution in the field of geotechnical engineering. Its main aim is to prove the concept that GIS has a highly extendable and customizable environment that can fit even the highly complicated problems. Therefore the embankment dams where chosen to be modeled by GIS in this thesis, due to the fact the their problem is one of the most complicated problems in geotechnical engineering even starting from their representation until reaching to their analysis.
The analysis of pore water pressure under the dam was chosen to be modeled. As if this not a direct application in GIS, two visual basic programs using GIS objects were developed to solve the problem. The main aims of the programs were to distribute the applied pressure of the dam to the soil layers under it and to get variation of pore water pressure with X,Y,Z coordinates and time. The two programs were verified using a group of textbook examples and then used in the analysis of pore water pressure under the Canadian Dam of NIPWAIN.
