Abstract

This study was conducted to 1) determine the precipitating factors of HE in Egyptian cirrhotic patients. Also 2) to build up accurate, simple, and applicable system for prediction of development of HE in patients with liver cirrhosis and liver cell failure and 3) to determine the factors which affect the outcome of HE.
To achieve these aims:
1) We investigated the possible precipitating factors of HE in 40 cirrhotic patients presented with encephalopathy ‘G1’.
2) 92 factors included special habits, symptoms, signs and results of investigations in these patients were compared with those of other 40 cirrhotic patients without encephalopathy’G2’ to discover any factor related to the occurrence of HE in cirrhotic patients and can be used as a predictor of development of HE.
3) Within the 40 HE patients data of the survived 26 patients (G1a) was compared with data of 14 patients who died (G1b) in order to find out the factors which affect the outcome in cirrhotic patients suffering from HE.
This study was conducted during the period from June 2006 to May 2007 in Ain Shams University Hospitals, and included 80 cirrhotic patients divided according to presence of hepatic encephalopathy into 2 equal groups. Group I was subdivided according to the fate of the patients into GIa (26 survived) and GIb (14 patients died.
