Abstract

The environmental pollution cased by the wastewater from a phosphate fertilizer
plant was investigated. The concentrations of radionuclides fluoride and hea~ metals
in phosphate fertilizer (raw materials, end products and by-products) and other types
of fertilizer samples were measured. The concentrations of these elements were also
measured in environmental samples (water, sediment and plant) collected from the
proximity of outlet of wastewater discharge pipes of the phosphate fertilizer company.
The concentratioi~s of natural and artificial radioactivjties in phosphate fe~ilizer and
environmental samples were detennined using 7-ray spectrometers employing NaI(Tl)
and HPGe detectors. The contents of fluoride and hea~, metals were also determined
in these samples using ion selectivity meter and X-ray fluorescence spectrometer,
respectively.
The contents of Sr, Sn and Ba were ranged from 397 to 1091, 16.7 to 235, and
471 to 1645 mg/kg for phosphate fertilizer samples, respectively. In the case of
se~ment samples, the contents of Sr, Sn, Ba and Fe were ranged from 192 to 435
mg/kg, 33.8 to 117 mg/kg, 1210 to 4284 mg/lcg and an under detection limit to 452
g/kg, respectively. Also, the fluoride concentration was ranged from 0.03 to 0.25
mg/g, 0.002 to 0.0.006 mg/g, 0.42 to 1.88 mg/g and 0.44 to 7.3 mg/I for phosphate
fertilizer, other types of fertilizer, sediment and water samples, respectively.
