Abstract

aQuality of life has become the main public health challenge of the present century. Health is the most valued aspect of QOL in any society. The QOL is affected by various conditions, the most important of which are chronic morbidities. These conditions have detrimental effects on physical, psychological, and social well being of elderly patients. As the elderly population is growing, so will be the magnitude of the problem of chronic morbidities and poor QOL. In Egypt researches regarding chronic morbidities among the elderly and their impact on QOL are not much investigated. This study was conducted to study the QOL of a group of elderly with common chronic morbidities in Alexandria Main University Hospital. • So this study aims to identify different functional disabilities, psychological consequences, and social derangement among elderly patients with different chronic morbidities. • A total sample of 400 patients ; 321 females and 79 males attending four outpatient clinics; physiotherapy, diabetes, internal medicine, and oncology during the scheduled visits and fulfilling the inclusion criteria, were included in this study. Inclusion criteria were: age 60 years and over, duration of chronic condition more than one year, and having no communication problems. Each clinic was visited by the researcher once a week for a period of four months. Data Collection For the proper execution of the present study, the following tools were used: • A structured pre-coded questionnaire was used to collect data about sociodemographic characteristics, impact of current illness on personal habits, medical history, and future fears. • Katz index of activities of daily living. (ADL) • Lawton scale for instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). • Duke UNC Health profile • Geriatric depression scale (GDS short form)
