Abstract

Elder abuse is a major public health problem. Elderly persons are erable to physical, psychological, or fmancial abuse and/or neglect their family members or other caregivers. The socio-cultural factors as :gative attitudes towards elders that engender feelings of low self worth, !e trend toward smaller families and geographic separation of family mbers, as well as lack of community resources to provide information respite care to care givers are considered potential causes of elder The incidence of abuse in institutions is not known. Effective tervention for elder abuse is needed to assist and enforce the :mpowerment of elderly to live lives free from abuse and neglect, or change the circumstances that have led to abuse. The present work was conducted to study the profile of some types of elder abuse among elderly people living in geriatric homes in Alexandria, and to construct, implement, and evaluate a nursing intervention action of a supportive educational program for the abused elderly. The study was carried out in Alexandria. Data were collected from a sample of 300 elderly persons (both sexes), aged 60 years or more, Jiving in eleven geriatric homes in Alexandria. A cross-sectional design was used to study the various types of abuse, and to investigate the profile of the problem. A Quasi experimental design (a before-after study) was used to evaluate the impact of a supportive educational program through pre-post assessment. A structured interview questionnaire was constructed to screen for elderly abuse. In addition, the Arabic version of Beck Depression Inventory was applied to assess their level of depression. A self-report questionnaire for care givers (total 31 persons) was ~igned to reveal the caregivers’ point of view concerning the problems ’dderly care in general, and elderly abuse as a problem in particular. An educational supportive program was conducted in five geriatric mes for a group of abused elderly (69 persons). The objectives of that ’ogram were to: give information about different types of elder abuse, :Ip abused elderly to gain insight of their problems, help them to cope ’rh their existing problems, improve their problem solving and decision aking skills, orient them about the available services for help, and incourage group support. Evaluation of the effective ness of the program 18S done through pre-post assessment. The latter was conducted one ~onth after the program.
