Abstract This thesis is concerned with the Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld terminals (DVB-H) system which represents the European standard of such systems with an evaluation of its performance. Thesis starts with a complete overview on the DVB-H standard and system then it focuses on the OFDM unit with all its specifications mentioned in the standard with demonstration of the OFDM itself as a modulation technique. The different channel impairments that affect the propagating radio signal specially if the receiver is a mobile one such as the propagation loss, slow fading, fast fading, flat fading, frequency selective fading and Doppler effect were discussed. Various interpolation algorithms used for channel equalization such as the linear, nearest, spline, second order Gaussian and 2D interpolations were also represented. The complete OFDM transmitter/receiver system is then simulated on MATLAB according to the DVB-H standard specifications with a study of the effect of the different channel impairments on its performance, applying different interpolation methods used for channel equalization with comparison between them. Also two algorithms for channel estimation in DVB-H systems based on interpolation are proposed and 10 they were found to outperform the previously known methods with respect to the BER criterion. |
