Abstract The present thesis affords comprehensive studies on the chemical structure of polyphenolic and flavonoid constituents and their glycosides isolated from the twigs and leaves of a local plant named Justicia adhatoda (family Acanthaceace ). This plant has been selected to be the subject of this thesis due to the scarce informations about its phenolic and flavonoids constituents in the literature and its biological activities. The twigs of the Justicia adhatoda, were dried, powdered and extracted with 75% ethyl alcohol for several times. The extract was applied on polyamide column and eluted with water and water/ethanol mixture with gradual increase in concentration whereby seven fractions were obtained. The first fraction showed to contain free sugars which were identified as glucose, galactose and rhamnose. Investigation of the second fraction led to the identification of two compounds (T1 and T2) which were identified as vicenin II and lucenin II. |
