Abstract
Polymer-layered clay nanocomposites have received much attention because of the significant improvement in thermal stability, flame retardancy, and mechanical properties of virgin polymer at low clay loading. The preparation of nanocomposites may be accomplished either by in-situ polymerization or by blending. To maximize the effect of nano-filler on performance, it is important that the clay be exfoliated. This may be accomplished in two steps: (1) Intercalation of organic modifier into clay. (2) Exfoliation of the intercalated clay either by in-situ polymerization or by intercalation of preformed polymers solutions was achieved.
In order to obtain well-dispersed nanocomposites, the compatibility and thermal stability must be taken in the consideration. The correct design of modified clay is the key factor to ensure the effective penetration of the monomers, oligomers or polymers into clay interlayers which leads to produce the desired exfoliation or intercalated nanocomposites.
