Abstract This study is undertaken to gain complete understanding of the effect of carbonaceous organic matter concentration on the activity of nitrifying bacteria. Several experiments are conducted or raw, primary settled and final effluent from activated sludge sewage treatment plant and also on synthetic media to determine the bod progression characteristics. This work shows that the presence of organic matter, particulary amino compounds in excessive concentrations; inhibits the growth and respiration of nitrifying organisms. It is believed that nitrifying flora will not start their activity and multiplication unless the level of organic matter reaches a certain low concentration. |
