Abstract

The egyptian construction industry is facing increasing challenges due to privatization and increasing competition from foregin contractors.These challenges imply the need to control costs and make more precise estimates. Labor costs are main cost items that should be accurately estimated during the initial projrct phases and controlled during construction. Currently, There is no formal method to estimate the required supervision and service work force in construction project in egypt. This leads to inaccurate estimates of project costs in addition to understaffing or overstaffing during construction. The main objective of this research is to put standard rates of the most suitable size of both supervision and service work force in different construction projects types(such as bridges, water treatment plants, power stations and buildings). Average production rates for productive workers are common and documented in different sources,Therefore, the scope of work is to consider only the supervision and service work force.
The data from 34 recent construction projects from public and private sector are used to evaluate the following :
1- To determine the average rates of supervision work force and service work force.
2- Regression analysis plots were generated to predict supervision work force and service work force for projects of given type and cost.
The main conclusion of this research can be summarized as follows :
* The housing and duilding projects for bublic sector achieved the highest rate of supervision work force.
* The housing and building projects for puplic sector achieved the highest rate of service work force.
* The civil projects for private sector achieved the lowest rate of supervision work force.
* The civil projects for public sector achieved the lowest rate of service work force.
These results can be used as a guide for a future period until is update with a better average due to factors affecting work force average rate :-
- Inflation.
-New technology.
-Method of statement.
Egyptian construction companies can use these results as a base for human resources planning in different types of projects.
