Abstract

Asthma is a complex syndrome with many clinical phenotypes in both adults and children.
Its major characteristics include a variable degree of airflow obstruction, bronchial hyper-responsiveness, and airway inflammation.
The aim of this essay is to discuss the causes of increased prevalence of bronchial asthma in children in recent years.
Asthma is an important condition with a very variable rate in prevalence that has become an actually increasing burden on health in both developed and developing communities.
Several studies indicate that it is on the rise worldwide.
Several estimates have placed the point prevalence of asthma range widely from less than 1% in developing countries to greater than 10% of children in some developed countries. In Egypt, the prevalence of asthma among children was estimated to be 8.2 %.
Many factors can modify the course of bronchial asthma.
A topic status, genetic and environmental factors interaction are the most important of these factors.
Other less important factors include age, gender, race, socio-economic standard, breast-feeding, diet, maternal age, early life changes and obesity.
The increasing prevalence of allergic disease around the world has been attributed to many factors, including: environmental changes, reporting bias, the hygiene hypothesis, pre-conceptional, prenatal and postnatal effects on atopy, inappropriate exposure to allergens during infancy, the decline in breast-feeding.
