Abstract

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a compressive neuropathy of the posterior tibial nerve or one of its branches within the tarsal tunnel , a fibro-osseous space located between the medial malleolus and calcaneus undercover of flexor retinaculum (lacinate ligament) .The ventral rami of L4 through S3 give rise to the sciatic nerve trunk that divides at the superior aspect of the popliteal fossa into the common peroneal and tibial nerve which descends within the deep posterior compartment of the leg (now it is named posterior tibial nerve) and divides into its terminal branches . At the level of the ankle it gives off its calcaneal sensory branch and then bifurcates into the medial and lateral planter nerves within the tarsal tunnel. The contents of the tarsal tunnel are, from anterior to posterior; tibialis posterior tendon ,flexor digitorum longus tendon ,posterior tibial artery and vein ,posterior tibial nerve ,and the flexor hallucis longus tendon .
