Abstract

In this work, 40 patients suffering from peripheral nerve injury in the upper limb were treated by microsurgical repair techniques; internal neurolysis, epineurial, group fascicles repairs and nerve grafting. All the patients were available for follow up at a mean of 9.47± 3.3 months, ranging from 6 to 19 months. The youngest patient in this series was 4 years old and the eldest was 62 years, with a mean of 23.25 years. They were 28 males and 12 females. The right side was affected in 25 and the left side in 15 patients. All of them were right handed. Thirty-four patients sustained trauma resulting in open injury, six patients had closed injury. The ulnar nerve was the most injured nerve (45 %); the median nerve was injured in 22.5% of the patients. The digital nerves were injured in 20 % of the patients. The wrist area was the most commonly injured (37.5%) site followed by the forearm (20 %). Half of the patients had associated tendons injury (50 %) while 25 % had associated fractures. Seven patients had associated tendons and fractures injury. Group fascicle repairs were the mostly used type of repair in 40 % of the patients. Cable graft repairs and epineurial repair were used in 7.5 % and 27.5% of the patients respectively.
