Abstract

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is considered one of the dis eases of the Middle, Far and Near East. This disease is known in most of Arab countries by many local names e~g. Baghdad boil in Iraq, Aleppo boil in Syria and El Ohet in Saudi Arabia. In A.R.E. it is named Nile boil or Hehyia boil. The study have shown that cutaneous leishmaniasis is . known in A.R.E. since the past years in low number but after evacuation of people away from Suez Canal zone, and then reconstruction together with increase in the incidence of rodents population in the area east Delta in addition to the increase of employees travelling to neighbouring Arab countries.where this disease is. endemic. All these factors led to rapid spread of leishmaniasis in A.R.E., and ~his is going hand in hand with the high incidence of rodents in some governorates to the extent that it eats the crops in the field giving also great trouble to the human being at home, factories and schools. Also the sand fly is found in nearly all-over the country. So it is very important to develop a good preven tive and control protocol for the sandfly, rodents and dogs, together with early diagnosis and treatment of cases in the form of periodical examination of school children at least on~e per year. The results obtained from this study show the p088i- , bility of sudden outbreaks of this disease. I An outbreak of the disease has occurred in El Ballah, Ismailiya Governorate in the year 1979, also similar sudden outbreaks in Saudi Arabia during the years 1975 and 1976 and in Jordan during the year 1984. It is important to mention here that rodents, in general are considered as very dangerous source of infection to man with many parasitologieal, bacteriologic and viral diseases. Thus it is very important to develop proper anti-rodent measures.
