Abstract In all her novels, Toni Morrison deals with the tragedy of the blacks in the American society tackling social injustice and racial discrimination. She tries to uncover the flaws of a society in which the blacks are controlled by the whites. The thesis handles those social injustice and racial discrimination in a way which shows the horrors of slavery and examines the look of the whites towards the blacks as a second race which, in turn, creates in blacks a sense of inferiority. It discusses how Morrison depicts the damaging impact of white racist practices on the blacks from the period of slavery which has destroyed the individual identity and role within the community up till recently. It also depicts how some blacks abandon their black beliefs and values in favor of the beliefs and values of the white dominant culture, and how other blacks take violence as an outlet to their anger. It manifests how this violence could be directed to the whites or to other blacks ”black-on -black violence,” and how others come to hate themselves and their blackness when judging themselves according to the white standards. The thesis shows how Toni Morrison suggests that if the blacks want to make their way in such a white-dominated society, they, on one hand, must be proud of their past and traditions. On the other hand they must look to the future as humans, overcoming the issue of racism and color-caste hierarchy. She comes to the conclusion that the least information we know about someone is his race. |
