Abstract This work was carried out at the Experimental Farm of ICafr El- Slleilth, Faculty of Agriculture during the winter seasons of 1995196 and 1996197. It aimed to study the effect of transplanting date of lettuce, intercropping system and their interaction on vegetative growth, yield and its quality and chemical analysis in leaves of cabbage (Brunswick cv.) and lettuce (Balady cv.) . Competitive relationships, yield advantage, net return and monetary advantage for both crops were also computed. The experiment included 16 treatments which were the combination of thee transplanting dates of lettuce and four intercropping systems between cabbage and lettuce in addition to, three control treatinents with the different transplanting dates for pure stand of lettuce and one control treatment for pure stand of cabbage. Transplanting dates of lett~lce seedlings were : October 1 oB (at the same time of cabbage transplanting), October 25’ (1 5 days latter) and November 1 o4 (30 days latter). Intercropping systems were: System1 : Lettuce was planted on the northern side and cabbage on the so~~thesrind e of the same ridge. System2: Lettuce was planted on botli sides and cabbage on the soutbern side of the same ridge alternatively with lettuce within the row. System3: Lettuce was planted on botli sides and cabbage on the top of the same ridge. System4: Lettuce and cabbage were planted on both sides of the ridge alternatively with each other within the rows. |
