Abstract
The use of drugs for social rather than prescribed medical reasons is said to be progressing at an alarming rate among Egypt ian youths. This study was carried out to investigate the problem of drug dependence in Alexandria Governorate. The aim of the study included determination of factors affecting the problem of drug abuse and its various dimensions, implications of drug abuse on society, work, family & the addict himself and developing practical recommendations regarding prevention of occurrence of drug abuse, management and treatment of cases & prevention of recurrence. A special interviewing schedule was desinged to gather informat’ion from the patients who were selected from three institutions namely EI-Mamoura Hospital for inpatient treatment, as well as Shark El Madina Hospital and the private sector for outpatient treatment. The total sample size amounted to 120 cases. In addition, a retros pective study was conducted along the years 1984 & 1985 in the different institutions under study to assess the situation of this problem. Results of the retrospective study indicated a regression ~ in abuse of traditional drug dependency (hashish & raw opium) and I the increase in abuse of new synthetic drugs (heroin & pills). ’This view was also proved by the study sample wh
