Therefore, research have been looking for strategies and educational programs through which the reading comprehension skills can be developed among students at the different stages. Semantic mapping strategy is one of the teaching strategies used in developing vocabulary, language skills and reading skills of the learners in the regular and diagnostic classes. Therefore, the present research attempted to find out the effectiveness of semantic mapping strategy in developing the reading comprehension skills among prep stage students. Problem of the study: The problem of the study is the low level of the prep stage pupils’ reading comprehension skills. Questions of the study: 1- What are the reading comprehension skills needed by the pupils’ at the prep stage? 2- What is the effectiveness of using the semantic mapping strategy in developing these skills? Limitations of the study: The present study is limited to : 1- The reading textboes, 2- Pupils at the secon •••• ~ the prep stage. Jk ~~_. ’Mr” -1- r 3- Some reading comprehension skills. They are : - Identifying the general theme of the text. - Identifying the supporting ideas. - Deducing the main idea of a paragraph. - Deducing the writer’s objectives. - Deducing cause and effect relation. - Deducing similarities and dissimilarities. - Distinguishing what is related to the subject from what is not. - Distinguishing facts from opinion. - Distinguishing· rational from irrational ideas. - Distinguishing weak from strong defenses. - Producing judgements about what is read. Terms of the study: The following terms are defined in the study: - Strategy. - Semantic mapping. - Reading comprehension. - Reading comprehension skills. Procedures of the s••••Y: I. To determine the bases of the semantic mapping strategy related literature was reviewed accordingly, maps were prepared to the reading topics in the second year, prep stage. Then, a teacher’s manual for using the strategy was prepared and presented to jury members. The maps were modified according to the suggestions of the jury members. III. Construction of the reading comprehension skills test and proved to be both valid and reiiable. IV. To determine the effectiveness of the semantic mapping strategy in developing reading comprehension skills, the following steps were followed: _ The study sample was selected and divided into control and experimental groups. • The reading comprehension test was applied to the sample as pretest. _ Teaching the·two groups. _ The reading comprehension test was applied to the sample as a post-test. V. Statistical treatments, results and interpretation of the results. Results of the study: Results of the study indicated that there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group in all of the reading comprehension skills and levels at the 0.01 level. |
