Abstract

The assessment of health status of ammy recruits is important because health is the most important driv¬ ing force as it tends to maximize the person’s ~orale and physical ability. The physical and mental health of the recruits comprise a focus of much concern for mili¬ tary leaders, because the nature of military duty requ¬ ires that a’high level of physical and mental health be maintained for successful job performance. The aim ot the present study was to assess the health status ot ~ recruits and to reveal the diffe¬ rent health problems of the recruit s. The study was concerned with mass health examination and screening of recruits according to their fitness for military service rather than detection of diseases. There are many varia¬ bles which affect the levels of health, because recruit’s health is not isolated from the influences of environment I ”’;; culture, society and family, for this purpose it is important to include such data in the study. The sample of the study was taken from new recr¬ uits attending examinations for fitness for military service at two recruiting stations, first cairo rec¬ ruiting station receives the new recruits from two governorates cairo and El-Kalybia, the second Giza El-Fayeum, and Beni-Souef. This study was carried out on a syste~tic random sample of new recruits (1668 ) during the year 1984. A subsample of (192) recruits was drawn from the original sample and was followed up after one year in active duty to study the effect of military service on recuit’s adjustment. The data collected through th~ use of opservati¬ onal form to give de~ailed information about the differ¬ ent variables that may influence ’the health status and military fitness of the recruits. In addition a separate instrument was used to measure the attitudes of all recruits towards military service, also the Health opinion survey test was applied on the subsample which was followed up for one year. The main results of the study revealed the following: 1 ¬ about one third ( ’2.1’) of recruits were discovered that had dental problems. 2 ¬ Vision and eye problems severe enough to be noted as significant, were observed in one-fif¬ ith ( 20. ?4~) of tbe examined sample. , - Musclo skeletal disorders were observed among . 9. 65~ ot tbe examined sample. 4 ¬ Skin problems were oQserved among ? .98~ of the sample. 5 - Surgical problems were observed in 7.56 of the examined sample. - 6 - Ear problems includes ,.6of the eamoned sample 7 - Other health problems regarded as significant according to militayr fitness but were prevalent among no more than ,,, of the examined sample include certain medical problems and mental reta¬ rdation. 8- The socioeconomic variables had and inverse relati¬ onship to the prevalence of health problems in recruits. 9- The bilharzial history was the most prevalent in the personal history of diseases. 10- The attitude of recruits towards military service was more favorable in age group 24-25 years, urban recruits and recruits from big family size. 11- The mean heights of urban recruits ( 168. 84 cm.) is higher than the mean heights of rural recruits(166.9lcm.) Also the mean weights at urban recruits (65.’5 kg.) is bigber than tbe mean weigbts ot rural recru”.. ts (60.65 kg). 12- Tbe tit A group of recruits had more favorable attitude tban tbe tit B group. As regards tbe Healtb opinion Surve7, it was found that tit A 6roup bad lower score mean than fit B ~oup. Also educational anQ age was higher in the recruits w1 th lower score in Health opinion Survey. The main recommendations are the following. 1 - More attention should be given to improve pre¬ 2 ¬ natal care, school health and general health services, because the health problems during tbese periods reflects their effect on the bea¬ lth status of recruits. Establisbmen~ of a comprehensive, preventive and curative health services, specially in the rural areas. , - Improvement of ’the nutritional status ot the young 4¬ 5 ¬ peoples ot rural areas, and eradication of bilhar¬ zial intectionin rural areas. Giving more effort and t iDLe in training to recru¬ its who have a lower education level and those of young age to help them to adjust properly to mili¬ tary zervice. The affitude scale and Health Opinion Survey deve¬ loped and used in the study proved to be adequate in the measurement of recruit’s military adjustment. They were of predictive value in the discrimination . between adjusted and maladjusted recruits.
