Abstract Gastrointestinal endoscopy has gained a wide acceptance as it can be used successfully for diagnosis and management of different gastrotestinal disorders. It is a safe procedure causing minimal discomfort to patients and could save some from surgical intervention. Although, gastrointestinal endoscopy may be accompanied by different complications. Major complications related to endoscopic procedures are cardioplumonary complications, complications related to sedation and anaesthesia, infectious complications, perforation, and bleeding. Infectious complications related to gastrointestinal endoscopy result either from the procedure itself or from the use of contaminated equipment. Transient bacteremia may occur during a diagnostic endoscopic procedure and it found more often during therapeutic procedures. The present study included 75 patients who were referred to the endoscopy unites of Menoufiya University Hospital. They were (46) males (61.3%) and (29) females (38.7%); their ages were ranging from (17) years to (73) years with a mean value of (48.05) years. All patients had the indication for gastrointestinal endoscopy whether diagnostic or therapeutic. An informed conesent was obtained before patients entered the study. |
