Abstract n the present study 27 patients suffering from splenic trauma were subjected to splenic salvage procedures excluding non operative salvage techniques. (9 underwent splenorrhaphy, 12 underwent partial splenectomy and 6 had subtotal splenectomies) in the Accident and Emergency Department, Benha University Hospital and Benha Health Insurance Hospital. There were no mortality or major morbidity among the studied patients. Hematological and immunological studies of the involved patients demonstrated the protective effect of the studied splenic salvage procedures with preserved immunological and hematological function of the remaining splenic tissue. In the present work the decreased incidence of post operative morbidity can be explained by the selection of patients with isolated splenic injuries in addition to the successful measures of resuscitation, decreased operative time, early removal of drains, short hospital stay, together with increased skill of the operating team. |
