Abstract

Rice blast disease, caused by Pyricularia oryzae Cav. is one of the most important diseases in Egypt as well as in most of the rice growing countries. While, brown spot disease caused by Helminthosporium oryzae Breda de Haan comes in the second rank after blast disease. This study was conducted to reduce the harmful of such diseases by different means. Therefore, the obtained results could be summarized as follows : Callus induction from different commercial Egyptian rice cultivars which have been known susceptible to blast was studied. Three callus induction media were used in this study i.e. Murashige and Skoog’s (MS); Gamborg’s B5 (B5) and N6 media. Callus formation was the best on N6 medium. Comparison study between four studied rice cultivars, Giza 171, Giza 172, Giza 176 and Reiho revealed that Giza 176 showed the highest response of calli formation, while Giza 171 and Giza 172 showed the lowest response, whereas Reiho was intermediate between them.
