Abstract

This study aims at developing students’ reading skills of literary’ texts through some learner-centered activities. Three different methods of teaching were used in this study: lecturing, semantic mapping and literature circles. Ninety six students enrolled in the second year, English Language Department, Faculty of Education, Menoufiya University were the subjects of this study. They were divided into three groups; each consisting of thirty two students. The control group was taught using the common method of lecturing, experimental group (1) was taught using semantic mapping and experimental group (2) was taught using literature circles.The three groups were tested before experimentation. The researcher prepared a test concerning reading skills of literary texts to determine The level of their performance and to ensure that there were no significant differences among them. Then, the experimentation was conducted using literary texts compiled by the researcher. The text consisted of eleven prose literary texts: live short stories, five one - act plays and one three - act play. After experimentation, the three groups were tested using the same test used before experimentation. Data was treated statistically and the findings were analyzed and discussed.
