Abstract

The successful use of hlame as a thermal technique to control the weeds and grasses depends on the duration of exposure to heat, temperature gradient and the relative heat resistance of various types of weeds and crop plants. The used flame must have specified characteristics with an effective temperature field suitable for flame treatments. The knowledge of the resulting temperature distribution throughout the flame domain is needed for the purpose of selective flame cultivation and to protect the crop plants from damage by the flaming action.
The present work studies the effect of different flaming parameters on the temperature distribution through flame weeding. These parameters included the height and the inclination angle of the burner with respect to the ground surface, the horizontal and the vertical coordinates of the different locations inside the flame domin, the flame width, and the travel speed of the flaming burner.
A fish tail flat burner of simple design using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a fuel was used to produce the required flame which has the most suitable characteristics for flame weeding. The operating conditions of this burner were optimized to obtain the best burning condition corresponding to the effective temperature field for flame treatments. An experimental program under stationary burner condition was carried out to achiece this aspect. Temperature data under different test conditions were measured through thermocouples and temperature recorders. Isothermal contours and the characteristic curves of temperature distributions throughout the flame domain which describe the performance of the used burner have been obtained.
Eperiments were carried out to obtain the temperature history under movable burner conditions. The effect of ezch dlaming parameter on the resulting temperature distribution was investigated. A correlation of the observed experimental data was made on the temperature as a dependent variable and the selected independent variables. The relationship between the temperature and each independent variable was investigated statistically by step wise regression analysis. This regression analysis. This regression analysis lead to an equation expressing the temperature as a function of the flaming parameters.
