Abstract

This study investigates several ecological aspects of a benthic invertebrate community associated with macroalgae in a local intertidal flat in the north-western part of the Red Sea, Egypt. The invertebrate community structure was analyzed with the help of some indices on three levels. In the first level, the analysis was performed on the community as one unit, and the second, the major five invertebrate community (invertebrate phyla) groups were treated and in the third level the subgroups of the most abundant community group (Arthropoda) were detected. The number of recorded species during the present study (from July, 1998 till June, 1999) was 76 species containing 63731 individuals. This reflects the striking animal diversity at the studied site. Shannon-Wienner and equitability diversity indices, Jaccard’s and Morisita’s similarity indices, dominance index, Morisita’s dispersion index and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and MDS ordination analysis were used to emphasize the features of the community and those of its major groups. Also, the relationship between macrofauna and macroalgal biomass was estimated.
