Abstract

Two field experiments were conducted at the experimenta1,farm of Sakha Agricultural Research Station, Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate, Egypt during the two successive winter seasons of 1996197 and 1997198. The main objective of this investigation to study the effect of planting methods at different seeding rates and harvesting dates on the growth, yield and its components, quality of fibers and seeds. A split-split plot design with four replicates was used where the main plots were designated to the two planting methods i.e. broadcast and drill were randomly allocated, the sub-plots to three seeding rates (50, 60 and 70 kg seedslfed.) and sub-sub plots to four harvesting dates (130, 140, 150 and 160 days from planting). The total area of each plot is 6 m2 (1.5 x 4 m). Flax seeds were planted on 2oth November 1996 and 5”’ December in the first and second seasons, respectively. The cultivar used was Giza 8 local commercial cultivar. All cultural practices were done as recommended for the region. Growth analysis determinations were carried at four growth stages. i.e. 60, 81, 102 and 123 days from planting, whereas yield and its components and fiber quality were determined at nature stage. Sunzmary (Experiment I) The results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : I. Growth analysis and growth attributes : I.A. Growth analysis : I.A. 1. Dry matter accumulation : In both seasons, broadcasting treatments out yielded in dry matter accumulation compared with drill ones in this trait at all growth stages. There was a positive relationship between seeding rate and dry weight per plant where plants from dense seeding surpassed those from light seeding rate. Furthermore, this trait decreased significantly with delaying harvesting date upto 160 days from planting. No of the interactions was significant. I.A.2. Plant height : At all growth stages, the difference between the planting methods broadcast and drill were insignificant in both seasons. The tallest plants were obtained from seeding at 70 kg seedslfed. in the two seasons of study. I.B. Growth attributes: I.B. 1. Crop growth rate (C.G.R.) : The differences between the two planting methods broadcast and drill on crop growth rate was highly significant at all growth periods in both seasons. In general, broadcasting ranked the first, the values of C.G.R. increased as plant population increased where the 70 kg seedlfed. had the highest values at the three periods. Sunmary (Experiment I) I.B.2. Relative growth rate (R.G.R.) : There was insignificant effect for both two planting methods on R.G.R. at all growth periods in both seasons. In creasing seeding rates had insignificant differences at all growth periods except at growth period 8 1 - 102 days in both seasons, where 70 kg seedslfad gave the highest value of R.G.R. 11. Yield and its components : I1.A. Straw yield and its Related characters : 1I.A. 1. Technical length (cm) : Technical length was insignificant influenced by the two planting methods in both seasons. Increasing seeding rate from 50 to 70 kglfaddan increased significantly technical plant length, furthermore, delaying harvest date increased the technical plant length in both seasons. No of interactions was significant except those planting method x seeding rate and seeding rate x harvesting date in 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons. II.A.2. Top branching zone length : The upper branching zone length were insignificant affected by planting methods broadcast and drill. Increasing seeding rate have highly significant effect on top branching zone length in both seasons. The difference between harvesting dates and technical plant length was highly significant effect in both seasons. None of interactions was significant.
