Abstract In this research, a laboratory investigation was carried out to study the improvements of soil materials when reinforced by different fabric types. The present research is divided into three main parts. The first part of study consists of carrying out tensile tests on the geogrid material CE111 as a type of fabric employed in the present investigation and manufactured locally in Egypt. The aim of this part is to study the effect of specimen dimensions on the tensile load, Poisson’s ratio (U) and tensile modulus (k). The test results indicated that, the tensile load increases with the increase of the specimen width (B) at constant length (L), and decreases with the increase of the specimen length (L) at constant width (B). also, the results indicated that Poisson’w ratio (u) increases with the increases of L/B and the tensile modulus (k) decreases with the increase of L/B. The second part of study consists of carrying out a plate loading tests on the sand bed reinforced by four different fabric types of geogrids and geotextiles. Three state of sand bed were used; loose, medium, and dense state where the relative density (R.D) equals to 30%, 50% and 70%, respectively. Model box with inner dimensions of 100 cm length, 75 cm depth and 25.4 cm width was used. a strip footing with dimensions 25 cm long, 10 cm width and 5 cm height were used. The effect of fabric layer position and layer length on the sand behavior was studied. The effect of fabric types on the behavior of dense sand was also studied. The results of this part of study indicated that the most suitable depth ratio (d/B) of the fabric layer is about 0.45, where the bearing capacity . |
