Abstract The technique of producing pot plants of those ornamental shrubs started since the sixties of the last century and especially for the flowering ones with the aim of obtaining colourful showy flowers for large period under indoor conditions. This can be attained through either pinching and/or using growth retardants to obtain compact plants. Thus, two shruby plants were chosen for experimentation in this connection: 1. Jacobinia carnea Lindl. (Justicia carnca Lindl.) Fain: Acanthaeccae: Common name; Jacobinia, Brazilian plume flower, king’s crown, plume flower, flamingo plant. It is an evergreen shrub 90 cm tall, 90 cm spread and is used in shady entry ways because of its rapid and compact growth but it does well in the border or as a container plant too. It has an upright growth rather than sprawling the year round showy pink flowers which are upright and tubular, the branches are covered with large dark green leaves, they are susceptible to breakage so handle gently striking flowers with numerous petals erupting from central cluster into crown shape. In summer the plant covers itself with large spikes of flowers in shades ranging from white, pink, red, orange, purple and yellow. |
