Abstract
The aim of this essay is to review the literature concerning age related macular degeneration regarding the risk factors, pathogenesis, clinical picture with special emphasis on diagnostic techniques and recent treatment modalities that are able to improve visual outcome of this disease such as (1) laser therapy using photodynamic therapy, transpupillary thermotherapy, laser photocoagulation and feeder vessel treatment (2) radiation therapy (3) pharmacotherapy such as intraviteral triamcinolone and antivascular endothelial growth factor (4) surgery such as surgical excision of membrane and macular translocation, (5) gene therapy and (6) food supplement.
