Abstract -66- Summary and Conclusion The deviated nasal septum may be associated with middle ear problems. particularly on the side of the nasal obstruction. This study aims to: find out whether middle ear pressure (MEP) correlates with the degree of nasal obstruction secondary to a deviated nasal septum • and to examine changes in middle ear pressure fOllOWingseptal surgery . In this study • 50 patients complaining of longstanding nasal obstruction due to deviated nasal septum were included. They are divided into two groups: * Study group ”A” ( 40 patients) with abnonnal negative middle ear pressure . * Control group ”B” (10 patients) with normal middl ear pressure. All patients were subjected to the following: 1 - Detailed history . 2 - Full otorhinolaryngological examination that included nasal endoscopy. 3 - Plain X- ray sinus view. 4 - Preoperative tympanometry using an American Electromedics AE 106 tympanometer . 5 - Septal surgery . 6 - Postoperative tympanometry using the same tympanometer. - - -- ----- - ----- ---------------------------- --- -.- ---- ---- ------ ---.- - -- --- --- - -- -- - -67- Results obtained could be summarised as follow : * In study group (A) 60 % of the diseased ears were found on the same side of the obstructed nasal passage. In the ear on the side of nasal blockage, middle ear pressure was _ 64.4 ± ”84.8 rom water preoperatively , and following surgery increased significantly to - 30.5± 39.Irom water (mean ± SD) . In the ear contralateral to the side of nasal blockage .middle ear pressure was -59±71.1 rom water preoperatively, and following surgery increased significantly to - 20.2 ± 37.7 rom water (mean + SD). * In control group (B) , all the patients exhibited no significant change in middle ear pressure in either ear following the septal surgery. • In conclusion, It was apparant that the patients with a deviated nasal septum may have associated middle ear disorders , particularly in the ear ipsilateral to the obstructed nasal passage . Correction of this deformity by septal surgery led to a corresponding improvement in middle ear pressure. ------- ----._- ----- -- -- ---- ----- -------- ----- ------ ---- ---- |
