Abstract This study was carried out at the Poultry Research Unit (PRU) belonging to the Department of Poultry Production, Faculty of Agriculture, Kafr El- Sheikh, Tanta University during the period from November (1992) to May (1995). The main objective of the study was to test the possibility of the genetic improvement of carcass quality of Pekin ducks through reducing its fat content specially the abdominal and the subcutaneous fat using selection method. The main criterion was the triglycerides concentration in blood plasma. Four successive generations (The base population and three selection generations) were included. The base population (Go) was taken from the main random bred flocks of the Poultry Research Unit. Two lines have been initiated from (Go), the first was selected line for reducing the triglycerides concentration in blood plasma while the another was let without selection as a control line. The studied characters included body weight at each 2 weeks interval during the fattening period (0 - 8 weeks) and 4 weeks interval during the growing period (8-24 weeks) Blood traits at 8 weeks of age in all generations, back skin fat and abdominal fat were also investigated. The later two traits were measured only in the third generation. Genetic parameters of the measured traits and selection response have been estimated. |
