Abstract

The present study was conducted on Japanese quail population (Cotumix cotumix japonica) belongs to the Poultry Research Unit, Department of Poultry Production, Faculty of Agriculture, Kafr El-Sheikh, Tanta University, during 1996-1999. The study continued for four generations after establishing the base population in order to study the effect of a certain selection index for the improvement of growth rate and egg production in Japanese quail each in suppopulation (LI and L2, respectively) and the third sup-population as control line (L3).
The selection index of LI for meat production line included the following traits: growth rate at 28 days f age, kell length (cm) and shank length (cm) at 28 days of age.
The selection index of L2 for egg production line included the following traits: age at sexual maturity (days) and the period needs to produce the first 10 eggs.
L3 as control line.
Also, other traits were evaluated in each generation of the study as following: Individual body weight at hatch, 2, 4, 6 weeks of age and body weight at sexual maturity.
