Abstract • Breast cancer is the commonest female malignancy that should be diagnosed as early as possible to get a good prognosis. • Early detection of breast cancer is best achieved by applying regular screening programs that address all women in general and those at 35 to 50 years of age in whom breast cancer was relatively more frequent. • Screening programs should include breast examination, mammography, ultrasonography and fine needle aspiration if needed. • Although breast self examination is considered as a first step in the early detection of breast cancer, however it is not widely practiced among women especially those without breast related symptoms. Therefore, women should have more awareness about this non-costly procedure. The gynecologist, in particular, is more suitable in instructing women to perform regular breast selfexamination. • Clinical breast examination was found to be a more accurate method in detecting breast lumps and other abnormalities. Clinical breast examination is best performed by the gynecologist during regular gynecologic visits with good patient compliance. Conclusions 133 • Both mammography and ultrasonography are complementary to each other in screening for breast cancer. Both modalities should be used together to avoid missing of undetected lesions. • Fine needle aspiration is an easy, cheap, rapid and relatively tolerable procedure’. It may be applied ’directly to those women with breast masses to get a rapid diagnosis thus allowing an early intervention. |
