Abstract The goal when treating patients with end stage renal disease is to increase patient survival and to provide a better quality of life and to date this could be achieved by kidney transplantation. Special problems associated with kidney transplantation were identified and documented and this was an essential step towards improved graft function, Post transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is one of these problems which need special concern. The present work was designed to evaluate PTDM regarding; incidence, risk factors for its occurrence, complications and its impact on both graft function and patient survival. This study comprised 602 kidney transplant recipients who received their grafts between March, 1976 and November, 2003 at Mansoura Urology and Nephrology center. Among these recipients, 1568 patients showed new onset of diabetes posttrannsplantation while the remaining 316 had normal blood glucose levels. On comparing both groups (diabetic versus non diabetics) the following were concluded: I- The incidence of posttransplant diabetes among our recipients was (18.2%). 2-The onset of new-onset diabetes post transplantation was higher in first 6 months (52%). 3-The most important risk factors for the development of posttransplant diabetes were older recipient’s age, positive family history of diabetes and obesity. |
