المستخلص

This research focuses on studying the relation between urban form and the environment in the desert settlements. This relation becomes very important in our time because of the increased governmental plans for developing desert areas.
The Egyptian desert, which forms, more than 96% of Egypt has great potentials for any future developmental plans. In addition, it can play a fundamental role in solving a lot of national problems and challenges.
Therefore, a policy of creating new desert communities was adapted in order to create a radical change in the urban, economic and social map of Egypt.
Accordingly, the planning and development of desert settlements should be done through rational planning processes within standards and criteria, which take into consideration the nature of desert, and its unique features.
This requires studying the general characteristics of Egyptian desert problems and the potentials of developing it.
Also, an analysis of our experience in new desert settlements and communities needs to be evaluated to determine its positive and negative sides.
This research aims at reaching for the basis of developing the urban form of settlements in the desert areas because it’s very important for the success of desert development.
By doing this, we can reach appropriate urban forms for Egyptian desert context an then we can achieve the comprehensive development, which we desire for Egypt.
Research Objectives:
Main Objective:
Determination of a set of design criteria by which an evaluation tool can be used by the planner, urbanist and decision maker to evaluate different urban forms for desert settlements.
Secondary Objectives:
- Determine the urban form features for desert cites and settlements.
- Deduce the relation between the urban character of desert cities and its natural, social and economical environment.
- Reaching for planning principals to be used in desert settlements developments.
Research Hypothesis:
The research in its different parts deals with a main hypothesis, which was phrased as follows:
” Urban form patterns for desert settlements have a unigue nature which differs from the Nile valley settlements ”.
Research Methodology:
The research methodology depends on extensive fieldwork to collect data and information regarding desert area and the urban form of desert settlements. The collected data were analyzed in the light of the main urban planning theories and concepts.
This analysis was done to deduce the main principles, which should be considered while dealing with the development of desert settlements.
The Structure of the Research:
This research contains four main parts.
Part One:
Introduction to the study:
In this part the researcher is trying to shed some light on desert definition, its features and characteristics. Also, theoretical understanding of the patterns of urban form.
This part consists of four chapters:
Chapter one: The definition of desert areas and its natural characteristics.
Chapter two: Development problems in desert areas.
Chapter three: The new urban settlements in Egypt.
Chapter four: Theoretical review of urban form patterns.
Part Two:
” The influencing factors on the urban form of desert settlements ”
This part consists of four chapters.
Chapter one: The elements of the urban form.
Chapter two: Design criteria for urban form.
Chapter three: Planning determinates for new desert settlements.
Chapter four: The relation between urban form and its natural context.
Part Three:
” Towards a methodology for evaluating urban form in new and existing cities in desert areas ”
This part consists of two chapters.
Chapter one: The elements of urban form and design criteria.
Chapter two: Analyzing the pattern of desert cities by which the planning objectives were achieved in the urban form of new and existing cities in desert areas.
Part Four:
” Towards a relation between urban form of new settlements in desert an a its environment ”
This part concludes four main points:
- Explaining the relation between new desert settlements and environment.
- The urban relationships which include size, movement patterns, land uses and denisty.
- The conditions of urban form success, which are depending on the design criteria which, achieve the planning objectives.
- Results and Recomendations.
