Abstract - 77 - Summary This essay is a brief discussion of the fungus infections of the eye. It falls into 4 chapters. The first one is an introduction about microbiology of fungi. General morphology, classification, reproduction, and finally staining and cultural characteristics of fungi are all discussed. The second chapter includes fungus infections of the lids, the conjunctiva, the lacrimal apparatus, the cornea, and the orbit. The ciinical picture, the laboratory diagnosis and the various lines of treatment are mentioned. The third chapter is about intraocular fungus infections. Exogenous and endogenous fungal endophthalmitis are discussed together with the presumed histoplasmic syndrome and its relation to the Histoplasma capsulatum. The fourth and the last chapter discusses antifungal agents. The action, the spectrum, the ophthalmic uses, the dosage and the adverse effects of each drug are mentioned. |
