Abstract

NEONATAL SEP’SIS
Definition: Neonatal septicemia OJ sepsis neonatorum is a bacterial disease of infants 30 days
of age or less which involves primarily the blood stream, although spread to
meninges or other organs eccars in me substantial portion of affected infant, No obvious focus of infection of the blood stream. can be found in most cases. The
presence of clinical rnanifestations distinguishes this condition from the translcnt
bacteremia observed in some healthy infants 1M,cCracken, 19811-
The tenus bacteremia and s.epticemia refer to the presence of bacteria in blood.
Bacteremia is used when bacteria are recovered from blood cultures obtained from a patient who does not appear to be seriously ill and who may be afebrile. In contrast, septicemia implies that blood cultures are positive and the patient appears
seriously 01’” diIJi~ly ill. When bacteria multiply at a rate that exceeds the capacity
of the reticuloendothelial system to I”l:nlOVC microorganisms, bacteremia results
