SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
This work was a prelimenary survey based on an immunological study for diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis. 300 patients were chosen, all were suffering from huge splenomegaly, with or with-out other manifistations suggestive of V.L. 30 persons were taken as controls.
All the patients were subjected to history taking and physical examination, urine and stuol analysis, blood film for malaria and blood picture and rectal snip for schistosomiasis . 60 patients, in whome the previous procedures fail to recognize the cause and the 30 controls all were examined for the presence of antibodies against leishmania using the Indirect Haem-Agglutinatinn test
( I.H.A. ) .
The results showed that 10 % of the patients were positive .
Since kala-azar is present in Egypt, the recommendation of the present study can be summarized in the following :-
1)A large scale population - based study, covering the whole country, to detect cases or carries of visceral leishmaniasis. A suitable method for survey is leishma-nin intradermal test or counter-immuno-electro-phoresis These should be followed by I.H.A. testing for the positive cases .
2)A large scale study on the reservoirs of the disease as regards canine like dogs and cats,or rodents .
3)An entomological study on sand fly including its bionom cs ,role of transmitting the disease and effectivness of different methods of control .

4)The response of the patients to different antileishmanial treatment has to be studied .
5)The immunological response of the patients to V.L. vaccine must be evaluated .
