Abstract The aim of this work was to study the effect of diabetes mellitus on gastric emptying. This study has been conducted on three groups, each comprised 10 subjects: Group A: Non-diabetic control subjects. Group B: Insulin-dependent diabetic patients. Group C: Non - insulin - dependent diabetic patients. Gastric outlet obstruction was excluded by upper gastroduodenoscopy and a sample of the gastric juice was taken for bacteriological examination. Delayed gastric emptying was confirmed with barium meal fluoroscopy in two diabetic patients. This work presented an incidence of 10% among all the studied diabetic patients and a ratio of 22.2% among patients with diabetic autonomic neuropathy. There was no relation between gastroparesis and hyperglycemia but the duration of diabetes appeared to have a factor of great importance. In this thesis, gastroparesis was found to be a complication in longstanding insulin-dependent diabetic patients in whom diabetes was poorly controlled. Bacterial growth, in the form of enterococci, was found in two diabetic patients. One of them had gastroparesis, and bacterial growth might be attributed to gastric stasis. It is recommended that the subject needs further study such as complete gastric function tests, manometric studies, differentiation between gastric studies gastric emptying of liquids and solids, biopsy and other bacteriological including anaerobic culture. |
